Astral Social Club

Situated squarely between the output of the Kompakt label and Black Dice sits Neil Campbell's Astral Social Club. Campbell utilizes the basis of repetitive German groove but adds a splash of noise and cut electronics to the mix to keep this from being just another minimal techno workout. Pushing repetition into hallucinogenic spaces, Octuplex sways into some pretty hazy headspace as it progresses with slow phases sweeping out the mechanical grind of beats like rising waves of euphoria. Campbell's deft ability at manipulating noise should come as no surprise given his roots in Vibracathedral Orchestra and Sunroof but it his ability to marry these manipulations seamlessly into motorik structures that makes this such an enticing release. A little something for the heads and the straight set here and perfect for drowning out pretty much any surrounding chaos.

Headdress

It seems that the shamanic desert wanderers known as Headdress have left the barren wastelands and entered the streets of the city. With this transition the band have dropped a bit of their Brightblack Morning lightness and delved into darker areas of blues drone. The high plains still hang over the sound of Lunes but it's a strangely urban high plain; full of street lit canyons and brick dusted caverns. They've begun to cut ground through Wooden Shjips and Blues Control territory but swapping one's heaviness for the others tempos. All the while the dank threat of drone hangs over the amplifier rubble they've begun kicking through, creeping in like an omen on the wind. A vast step up from their last album that'll see light via No Quarter, this one's begging to shake your turntable.

The Shaggs - Philosophy of the World
As far as family bands go The Partridges have got nothing on the Wiggins sisters. Now ok I know they can't really sing and yeah the timing on most of the Shaggs' songs are spastic at best but
somehow this just makes the effort all the more charming. The Shaggs came from rural New Hampshire and somehow their father was so blinded by love that he believed The Shaggs were a truly great band. Now on one level he was right because their heartfelt songs prove that anybody can get a band together and they pave the way for thousands of indie bands thumbing their nose at standards of listenability. They are the prequel to Jandek, Daniel Johnston and on down to the rise of simplicity with Beat Happening and I'll be damned if Twee didn't start right here. They wrote a song called "My Pal Foot Foot" for chrissakes. I mean what the hell is even going on there? That song makes about 6 seconds of sense. And so the band almost slipped into almost certain obscurity but luckily Frank Zappa got his hands on a copy and talked it up during an interview as one of his favorite albums, sparking a renewed bit of interest. Subsequently a few compilations were reissued and finally this original uh "masterpiece" in its unaltered form is back on the shelves. If you can see through the talent to the charm then you can certainly appreciate The Shaggs.

Sir Richard Bishop

Age has only sweetened the work of Richard Bishop and his latest album extends the journey that was begun on Polytheistic Fragments. Again blending the affectations of the Middle East with inflections of American slide blues and fingerpicking but the core of the album is Bishop's exploration of his Lebanese roots. The album contains a few wonderful covers of traditional Lebanese songs mingling with Bishop originals that explore a similar vein and often take inspiration from Egyptian guitarist Omar Khorshid. As with much of the Sun City and Bishop solo recordings; The Freak of Araby tends to envelop you in unknown streets and untouchable cultures that feel lost and safe all at the same time. Bishop continually stakes his claim as one of the most interesting instrumental guitarists working today.

Changes Changes Changes!!!

So two pretty big announcements around here centering around the 3rd aniversary of RSTB... give or take a month.

1. Yeah the site design has(finally) been updated. I've been wanting to put a fresh coat of paint on RSTB for a while now and thanks to the wonderful efforts of Mike over at The Royal Scourge we've got a spiffy new design. The header and navigation buttons look great and he's still working on a couple of other pieces for the section pages so stay tuned for that.

2. I'm proud to announce the download compilation Raven Sings The Blues Presents Vol.1.

This compilation was a long time in the works but its finally here so download the crap out if it. Full tracklist and backround are available on the dowload page and the .zip includes full color artwork courtesy of Darryl Norsen. Let me know what you guys think!

A whole bunch of good things have been streaming out of the Captured Tracks camp lately with 12"s from Blessure Grave, Dum Dum Girls and The Bitters. But the label's been doing just as well in 45 as they have in 33 and these singles certainlly prove it.

Woods - Sunlit 7"
Strangely enough the most memorable track on this one winds up being the B-side but "Sunlit" doesn't necessarily disappoint. It's a nice bit of fuzzy Woods pop and both of these tracks could easily have found their way onto Songs of Shame. B-Side, "The Dark,"
has made its way around the internetal channels and its definitely ensconced at the top of Woods output. Despite its shadowed title its also probably one of the brightest tracks they've ever recorded. This is the essential companion piece to their last album and it wouldn't be complete without it.

Brilliant Colors - Highly Evolved 7"
Keeping things simple, Brilliant Colors bang out lo-fi goodness on their second single. Tight with the Nodzzz folks, and running in the same endearingly charming styles - though nowhere near as spastic - the band strum, stumble and bang their
way through great tracks. Again here, its the B-Side that catches my attention more than the namesake but hey who am I to complain. Good songs are good songs.

Intelligence

Those familiar with Intelligence as it stands as an offshoot of The A-Frames and intersecting entity with Factums may be a bit thrown off here. Those familiar with their album Deuteronomy may have an inkling of what they're in for and well for the uninitiated, you'll probably just be pleasantly surprised. Two albums have sprung out of the Intelligence camp of late one, Crepuscule With Pac Man is out now on Born Bad and the other, Fake Surfers is out soon on In The Red. Both records have taken the noise, industrial rhythms and strange behaviors of previous Intelligence and injected them with a bit of recent melodicism and lo-fi garage charm. Fake Surfers in particular seems to have picked up a bit of swagger and swing that mixes with otherworldly moments that don't so much recall their brethren in Factums musically as they do in crafting an alien view on current music. Both albums evoke strange dreams, sun turning grey and back to brilliant, machines learning to whistle and visions broken swiftly into puzzle pieces. Though Crepuscule seems to strip away the whimsy just a little bit in favor of some post-punk nihilism. Both albums are key victories in Intelligences long struggle against reality.

The Fresh and Onlys

Now in some circles Shayde Sartin may not be a household name... scratch that, in most circles Sartin is not a household name. However, around here he's been an anchor in some pretty heavy Raven fodder; playing in the expanded version of Skygreen Leopards, The Skyhigh Band (backing up Wooden Wand), Giant Skyflower Band and of cours the inimitable Flying Canyon. So needless to say when the man had a new project out we were mighty interested. Shayde along with members of Black Fiction are now kicking out a very potent strain of garage that sounds so effortless you'd think that this band was deep in catalog and just now starting to surface. This is definitely has no markings of a debut album but then again the band's collective experience may speak to that. Swinginig from chugging riffs to breezy twang with the flick of a wrist and the curl of a smile, the band turned enough heads to get John Dwyer to kick out some vinyl for his rapidly solidifying Castle Face label. Add to this the fact that they served as backing band for the recently resurface Rodriguez when he began playing Cold Fact out and about after a long overdue reissue and you've got very little reason not to be checking out The Fresh and Onlys.

City Center

Fred Thomas steps away from the indie-pop temple in favor of lush electronic manipulations but he never really loses the core of his pop charm. City Center is leagues away from his work in Saturday Looks Good to Me and honestly that resume point hardly stands as a touchstone here. More indicative is that this follows up a gorgeous split with Grouper, that along with a constant stream of free downloads caught the attention of Type records. The swirling clatter of manipulated sound and looped guitars seem right at home at Type, as City Center is a very dense and complex record under the microscope. Pull out a few feet though, and it's simply a beautiful collection of sounds that soar and clink and strum and click. Thomas' voice and guitar push through watercolors of sound and texture, peeking melodies out of a delightful whirlwind of pixilated street sounds. Quite honestly I think that smitten is the only word that will best express how people will receive this album.

A few more chunks of garage's past up for grabs on the Jukebox this week. Some of the names might not be as far out, but these are some sorely overlooked tracks from each and every band.

[MP3] Mouse and the Traps - I'm A Man
Mouse and co. could be pretty soft in places but when they fired their grit and vigor up just right they spit out some pretty sweet little pieces of garage r'n'b. They do just that in their take on this oft covered 60's staple.

[MP3] Shadows of Knight - Shake
Sure you know them for their well worn cover of Them's "Gloria" but the Shadows really got.. uh overshadowed by that bit of radio fodder. This track burns its way in with a great organ intro but its when the drum break hits that the song reaches classic status. One of their best.

[MP3] The Remains - My Babe
The Remains' "Why Do I Cry" is a bona fide classic but the band definitely took a pretty good swing at a few others. This swaggering cover of Little Walter's classic can't really touch the original but its goes down pretty smooth.

[MP3] The Troggs - I Want You
One of the Troggs' most direct and fierce cuts, this one has a strange bit of sinister flavor to it. This has recently come back to life with a cover by Dead Luke but nobody does it like the Troggs. Desperation never sounded so good.

[MP3] The Alarm Clocks - Yeah
The Alarm Clocks had a bit of a Stones fixation and the number of songs they covered by them stands as testament. They drop a bit of the Jaggerisms on this one and keep things slow and gritty with a nice shout-along chorus.

Black Moth Super Rainbow

So BMSR finally take the plunge into the studio, knocking out a new album with veteran lush psychadelicist Dave Fridmann. In all truth though, aside from a few string touches and maybe a bit of fidelity squeezing in at the edges - it sounds pretty much like a Black Moth album. That's not to say that Fridmann didn't lay a hand on this, he seems to have smoothed out a few of the edges and in places I do kind of miss the grittier beats, but for the most part he did keep the band's aesthetic in tact. Just as hazy as ever and swirling with the kind of lost world mentality that makes each and every release from this collective so all encompassing. Though the vocorder vocals are still very much a centerpiece of the sound, there doesn't seem to be as much of the implied innocence as there has been in the past, its still a parallel existence but not as heavily locked in childhood as some of their past releases. Maybe this is the sound of Black Moth adolescence.

The latest in a long line of Jacuzzi Boys singles brings them together with another current RSTB fave, Woven Bones; A pretty perfect pairing in our books and both bands seem to use the opportunity to keep things decidedly easy going.

Jacuzzi Boys/ Woven Bones - Split 7"
The boys lay down one of their most low-key tracks yet, but don't think for a second that slowed tempos mean they lose any of their patented swagger. Sippin' slow and watchin' the clouds roll by, "The Countess"
hits like 4 pm Sunday afternoon drinking. On the flip, the Bones kick it up a bit, but not by a stretch. Locking into an easy chug, the track brings the quiet cool; never trying too hard but always knowing that you're impressed. Woven Bones have a bunch on the horizon which is excellent news in our opinion. Look out for another Needless 7", a single on Sweet Rot and an upcoming record from HoZac (yeah pretty excited about that last one!)

Kid Congo & The Pink Monkeybirds

Kid Congo Powers is by no means new to any scene, hell the man's a bit of a legend as far as sidemen go. He's laid his hand on strings in bands from The Cramps, to Gun Club and his more recent work with Nick Cave. Despite such a stacked resume, Powers still isn't much of a household name, but never you mind. Why? Because, Kid Congo Powers and the Monkeybirds have laid Dracula Boots all over your ass and you'd be well advised to pay attention. Full of Powers' greasy garage licks and even more full of his flayed sense of humor, the album fits in well with the new stable of contemporaries at In The Red quite nicely. Collar wide and stance wider, Powers is every bit the lounge entertainer, psychedelic connoisseur and vamped up garage swaggerist all California rolled into one delectable package. Spicy and saucy but pulled tighter than a codpiece, the album keeps the beat flowing through your veins and nodding in your neck. I can only hope that this album brings a welcome amount of praise down on Powers' knack for gettin’ the boogie out into the streets.

Gunslingers

French music's been pegged with a lot of connotations... and a breeding ground for psychedelic garage punk hasn't really ever been one of them. But you know what? Gunslingers are damn sure gonna have a say about that. Rearing their head on a label mostly known for digging up reissues rather than pulling out exceptional new talent, the band reeks of dirty leathers and wet tar but with a strangely occult menace hanging not too far over their heads. Not many bands will grab your attention with a quick dirty rumble and then launch headlong into a 12-minute crazed psych jam with a handle like "Lighter Slinger Festival". Gunslingers though they've got no real rules holding them down, hell this isn't even the only genre the members have mastered, they also tear things apart in the more metal edged Aluk Todo. Extra-curricular activities notwithstanding, its No More Invention is really the best thing they've put together and this album simply throttles from needle drop to run out. Now maybe praise will shift to the new French psychedelia and off the ever-present dance moves.

Magik Markers

Following a few small press releases, the Markers return to their Boss-era 90's inflections on Balf Quarry. Still driving right up the Sonic Youth highway, though this time turning the goods in to Drag City instead of Thurston's Ecstatic Peace, the (now) duo is definitely bringing the fury and fire here. Gucci Rapidshare Download this is not. Instead this is the most focused and sharp the band has ever been, I hesitate to say that they've attained a pop quality because though the songs are more palatable, they aren't exactly catchy. They're burning with intensity and ravaged with savage intensity, but they're not catchy. With only the occasional forray into meandering warbles, MM have crafted a sparse, acerbic masterpiece of clanging rock. Honestly between these two and Little Claw, should the unfortunate ever befall the eternal (sonic) Youth, there exist a few pretty good successors to the dissonant throne.

Warpig - Warpig
Canadian proto-metal band Warpig was one of those bands to tap into the oncoming wave of hard rock in 1968. They had everything any band would have needed to break ground, a heavy sound, some pretty decent tunes and a great anti-war name.
Unfortunately what they didn't have was a label with much money and wide distribution, which means that they weren't heard of much outside of their native Canada at the time. Their album was re-issued by London a few years later but by then proto-metal had already blossomed and the band weren't exactly leading the wave anymore. Needless to say, this has picked up much more attention in later years among the collector circuit and its well worth the listen both in historical context and as a decent slice of hard rock. Had they been properly handled its possible that the band would have done much more, but alas, like Leaf Hound they remain one of those bands that cut a great album only to be respected in retrospect. Yet another nice vinyl reissue of this has just surfaced this year and what better format to pick up this gem in? Besides, its not just any band who can write a song titled "Melody with Balls".

Eat Skull

Eat Skull burst out of their former cloud of fuzz and clatter for a cleaner sound, letting their inner Kiwi pop hearts shine on Wild and Inside. It's as if all the catchy parts you were pretty sure were lurking under their last album were actually allowed to roam free here; but don't think that just because they've shaved the stubble that Rob Enborn and crew have turned into distinguished party guests. There's still plenty of yelping, strumming and yeah the anthemic fist rattling garage hooks that they've always had - just y'know less crud in the mics and a new batch of tape on the amps. There's also a few, dare I say plaintive moments; bare bones but earnest and full of emotion. Quite honestly I'm glad for the bit of spit shine applied to their sound, Eat Skull really get comfortable with themselves here and the confident clarity makes for a pretty extended bout of repeat listening. I can even don the headphones for this one, though as with most of the Siltbreeze roster this is probably best left rattling your speakers to really appreciate it.

ECSR follow up their rather critically (though not as commercially) lauded album with this scrappier but no less infectious 7".

Eddy Current Suppression Ring - That Time of Day 7"
Not as dense and dark as last year's Primary Colours but this single out on Nervous Jerk is still plenty full of charm. The title track is a chugger that's balanced as usual between Current's guitar twang and Brendan
Suppression's reedy rasp. The band bounce it up a bit on the second cut and finish strong off the rails with "Noise In My Head" again vamping the twang knobs to full capacity. It could hardly be hoped that this would burn as hard as the album but then again PC wasn't really about singles; it was a slow dark rumbler that had to be experienced in full. Grab one of these if you see it, limited to 1000.

Gore

No surprise that one of the late 80s'/ early 90s' most influential instrumental metal groups should show up in reissue form on Southern Lord, right? Gore was a Dutch band that bridged the heaviness of 80's metal with the oncoming murky sludge of what would become grunge; a feat that seems mundane today with so many bands following the same formula, but keep in mind that Gore did it at much different time in history. And they were one of the first to do it. The two albums, Hart Gore and Mean Man's Dream are epic sludge-fests heavy on riffs and bleak in nature. So bleak in fact that they band would include unsung lyrics skewing heavy on the dystopian politics. They would go on to play with bands like Swans, Big Black and Black Flag - eventually recording with Albini and backing up some of Henry Rollins' spoken word pieces. However, even with support from John Peel the band was no match for low sales and mounting tensions, but they've left a pretty damned good legacy and this reissue proves it. Nab the double disc CD or go in for each album in its own vinyl reissue glory.

Wet Hair

Post-Raccoo-oo-oon goodness from Shawn Reed and Ryan Garbes jumps to NNF with a pretty devastating full length. The duo have put out a pretty steady stream of tapes on Reed's own Night People label as well as a really beautiful 12" that's as much an art piece as it is a record. Where the early tapes found the duo making strides away from Rac's destroyed guitar jams and into the realm of synth drone, here they've made the full jump. Two sides of gelatinous, shifting drones with vocal exorcisms looming at the edges. This is the most complete portrait of the Wet Hair sound yet, though I highly doubt that the two have finished experimenting with the needlessness of genre. As usual the NNF platters are limited so best to grab one early where you can.

Ilyas Ahmed

Another absolute stunner from Ahmed, this time bringing his sun-baked psych to the folks over at Root Strata. Where The Vertigo of Dawn lingered in hazy and at times hushed tones, Goner introduces some bite to Ahmed's palate this time 'round. Starting things off with a rusted twinge of distortion over his obscured vocals, the album proves that its not all deft picking in Ilyas' arsenal. He doesn't leave those in favor of verdant acoustic psych wanting though, the album cools its electric burn and returns to caressing the strings by the third song. Striking a nice balance between dust and gravel, Goner is clenched teeth and cool breezes. Ahmed seems to have finally whittled out his place in the murky waters of psychedelia and adding to the otherworldliness of this are the vocals of Grouper's own Liz Harris. On the closing track, her beautiful moan adds just another layer of filtered shimmer to what might be Ilyas' most complete statement yet.

The Lollipop Shoppe - Just Colour
Well Dead Moon fans, if you've picked up The Rats reissue out this year, dig a little further back to Fred Cole's first band. The rather unfortunately named Lollipop Shoppe cut this sole album in 1967 and its a pretty prime slice of
garage with a few forays into pop territory. The name actually was none of the band's doing, as they started out as The Weeds but upon getting signed to Uni were persuaded into the name change at the label's request. Given the time period in which this was recorded its no surprise that there are both hard tinged garage influences (a real glimpse of Cole's later path) and the occasional bout of psychedelia. There's certainly a softer side of Cole on display here but also the frantic punk we've come to love over the years. "You Must Be A Witch" is one of the era's most scathing and paranoid numbers and its presence on the album is probably the biggest insight into what would surface later in The Rats and Dead Moon. A sure necessity for fans of Cole but also not a bad little piece of the 60's garage puzzle.

Wooden Shjips

The Shjips have returned from the West with another slab of amplifier smoke; rumbling with electric thunder and crackling with current. Though not as outwardly heavy as those original singles, the band have kept their ear to the overwhelming groove that burns under all their songs; propelling that strange sense of throb and sway that buoys the torrent of guitar eruptions. Detractors are still going to nail Ripley's vocals for hitting the same detached timbre as the Doors but aside from the mere sound of his voice the similarities will always end there. Wooden Shjips are urging the heads to dance, or at least move which would be something of a feat out here in NY. But whether the effect is undertaken remains irrelevant, the band's already laid down the path to hazy momentum so its up to all of us to let go and follow. Here's to hoping that the second album leads to more touring, as the one time I saw them play out here it was even more awesome off record. Catche 'em if you can.

So this floats somewhere in the space between a re-released post and a singles post but nonetheless it's some extremely essential music. Pre-Heldon Pinhas at its best!

Schizo - Schizo! 7"
Richard Pinhas has been renowned as one of France's most innovative guitarists and a father of French electronic music. His work with Heldon ushered in a movement of experimentation that often drew in members of the philosophical
community in a combination of electronics and spoken word. However prior to his involvement with Heldon, Pinhas formed Schizo, a project focused more on heavy psychedelic guitar. Red Lounge has commissioned the reissue of this 3 track EP containing two heavy psych jams and one more experimental track that alludes to his later work with Heldon. This is definitely the heaviest that Pinhas would ever get and a very interesting footnote in the history of French music.

Blessure Grave

San Diego's Blessure Grave quickly follow up a tape on Night People with the Learn to Love the Rope 12" on Captured Tracks. Rounding up the dark and foreboding corners of new wave, the band don't exactly give off any sunny California vibes though the title should give a clear indication in that respect. Four originals and one pretty solid Shadow Ring cover that slip by almost too quickly. Dour but not sullen, the songs have a way of reveling in misery with out making the band seem on any sort of self-pity trip. This one chocks up yet another great release for the burgeoning Captured Tracks imprint, and aside from The Beets 12" (sorry kids I tried but just can't do it, live or on record), I'm digging pretty much the whole collection. They've got the clout and they've certainly got the taste which is only proved further by this limited 12" from Valet. Kurt Vile & The Violators

Vile gives his bedroom pop charm a big ole shot in the arm, fleshing out the sound with a full band treatment. This EP brings Philly's vilest into the studio and piles on another dose of dusted psych trappings with occasional room for a bit of electric carnage. Still tugging at the lonesome road mentality, despite being surrounded by friends, the beefed up lineup only serves to give Vile's space blues a bit more momentum. A little lighter on the pop hooks that dug into your scalp on Constant Hitmaker but what The Hunchback lacks in immediate hummability it more than makes up for in head nodding rock of the almost classic variety. When KV and the Violators really lock in that groove you can feel your skin tighten against the rain and smell the electricity in the air. Here's to hoping that the Violators don't let this serve as the only document of their promise.
