Meneguar - Tone Banks 1

The boys in Meneguar have cooked up a new concept over at their own Fuck It Tapes label. They're recording and releasing the Tone Banks series of cassette releases, a peek into the creative process behind the band. The first in the series captures two sides to Menegar; the first track "Some Downs" starts fairly reminiscent of an album ready track but devolves into a sprawling jam session workout. The flip side doesn't even make an attempt to start so formally. Two songs emerge and disappear inside incomplete ideas and dissonance gouged studio sprawlings. This really splits the difference between the band's pop leanings as Meneguar and their more experimental workouts as Shepherds. The band plan to keep issuing these as sessions progress and the insider peek is nothing if not interesting. Cassette is limited to 100 and features some of the best FIT artwork yet (though they're all pretty great).

Valet

Honey Owens continues to round up Portland's best and brightest to collaborate under the Valet moniker and she's no slouch herself; doing time with RSTB past faves Dark Yoga and JOMF as well as heading up Yarnlazer with Adam Forkner. Her latest record, Naked Acid blends more of her ghost dream psych noodles with an ever increasing amount of high plains incantations that threaten to tear loose and dissipate into the surrounding hills. The space blues vibe is heavy on the edges of this one but with Valet, Owens burrows these leanings back deep down into the earth. With every moment she seems about ready to let loose from the atmosphere, a fireball of barn toasted guitar snatches her back down into the dust; the push and pull of dirty etheralism washing over every inch of this album. Seems like some ears were perked up with the last Valet record and I'm damned certain that with this one quite a few more are going to be as well.

More reckless fun from a whole host of long lost garage classics; a dash of snotty ragged rockers with just enough melody to make 'em stick. Enjoy!

[MP3] The Great Society - You Can't Cry
Another great track from San Francisco's The Great Society. A laid back groove that pops into a burst of drums and guitar on the chorus. Disaffected garage at its best right here.

[MP3] The Caravelles - Lovin' Just My Style
A real stomper cut through with swells of organ and a frantic beat pushing it along. The track pulses and pulls then spills over into a mess of a bridge before roping itself back into a tight wound groove of youthful abandon.

[MP3] Rain - ESP
Loud and furious, this track is just a short burst and then its all over in a flurry of sweat and tension. The action never lets up; with some call and response chorus and pummeling drums this is garage rock catharsis.

[MP3] The Caretakers - East Side Story
A barrel of fuzz and an off kilter beat anchor this one to the floor, then tear loose with soaring vocals and thumping bass barrage. Can't recall another Caretakers song but this one more than proves there mettle.

[MP3] Serendipity - Through With You
Round out the set with this British psych stomper that all spacey organ and a passel of effects. Great melodies that tip the cap to prog's future but stay firmly rooted in garage-psych.

Howlin' Rain

Ethan Miller and Co. take their Comets side project further with a new album and an unexpected move to American Recordings. Still mining the same laconic 70's boogie rock vibe that permeated their debut, Magnificent Fiend further washes the fiery remnants of Comets influence away from the project. Miller really lets his melodic side shine through and carries his Creedanc/ Allman torch high with working man's blues, a tumble of piano and the smoothe sheen of horns that wash the album down like domestic draft. I've gotta admit that the debut grabbed me harder with its balance of fire and melody but Magnificent Fiend is nothing if not the natural progression from that album and Miller's attention to stylistic detail makes this less derivation than pure reinvention of the gritty sound he emanates. Best news of all in addition to this album being available on wax, American and Birdman are chipping in to re-release the S/T album in all its vinyl glory, which I've been waiting for since its release.

Shock and Awe, another great release tumbles out of the Social Registry Social Club 7" series. This time its from Growing, sounding here much in the same vein as their upcoming EP for Soc Reg.

Growing - Disconfirm b/w Horizon Drift 7"
More skitter and twitter resembling the new sound of Growing. Again this is very reminiscent of the new sound of Black Dice but with Growing's own twist on the twisted electrics. Hey since I was a fan of the last Dice LP,
I'm definitely not one to complain about band's following suit in this form. The A-Side burbles and chugs with delight while the B-Side of this stays true to the "Drift" part of its title; very low key with some digital crunch thrown on for good measure.

Graveyard

Graveyard owe a considerable nod to the ghosts of Classic Rock's past but as with many of their Swedish brethren, they've found a way to not only replicate the furiously muscular throb of the 70's blues explosion but to also impart it with the scattered ashes of folk and pscyhedelia that made the best examples of this period iconic. With a powerful vocal strain that burn with requisite tension and echoes of Blue Cheer and Flower Traveling Band fueling the constant rhythmic undercurrent, the band reign like a lost transmission picked up by odd atmospheric rifts in time. Graveyard slot themselves along a new breed Swedish heavy metal that has birthed Witchcraft and Dungen and their Self-Titled epic poses yet another argument squarely in favor of laying down albums on vinyl. This one's already out in Europe but Tee Pee records is bringing it stateside where it'll certainly find a good home nestled between Witch and The Warlocks in their roster.

Excepter

Excepter unleash another skewed assault on the senses, this time via the grace of Paw Tracks. Debt Dept. moves the collective even further away from the disjointed noise cloud of their beginnings and continues to mine the beat addled cough-syrup disco that Burgers and Tank Tapes laid the groundwork for. Not to say that the band has become all out digestible, far from it, but the fevered incantations and swarms of sample grease that the band has been known for now sport a pulse. Like the unholy spawn of dub and noise left to fend for itself, Excepter come from all sides chanting, pulsating and writhing with exultant pain. Keep you ears perked for this on mid-March.

Changeling

Roy Tatum is a damned busy man. Under his Changeling alter ego he's got releases out on at least 3 or more labels right now (Abandon Ship, Not Not Fun, Sick Head, etc.) and the quality is striking. This double side of shimmering drone trickles, entitled Absolutely Free is probably the best bit of Tatum's work I've heard to date. Both halves, labeled pt. 1 and pt. 2 shine like thick pink pearls underwater; murky and elusive with an undeniable ability to hold you in rapture as long as they're playing. Effortlessly simple but at the same time these two pieces flow like a natural link to something so universally other. Its at times hard to tell whether these two pieces are filled completely with despair or with hope, but maybe that's the beauty of them; that the two feelings are so closely tied that Tatum is able to skim lightly the exact dividing line between them. I suppose whichever feeling makes you absolutely free is the correct answer. Package in beautiful collage work by Bethany of Pocahaunted.

Primarily remembered as the first band formed by Todd Rundgren, the Nazz' first two albums a solid reminders of great rock that fell between the cracks.

The Nazz - Nazz
Much indebted to the wave of British Music crossing in the U.S. at the time, the first Nazz album takes the British Invasion sound for a ride through the American garage. Combining the polish of pop and the
heart and soul of snot nosed garage-punks, this is the most solid incarnation of the band and the songs here prove it. This is definitely one of the albums that shows the burgeoning of American hard-rock, even if it is through a British influence filter. This is absolutely classic and if you don't have it, track this sucker down!

The Nazz - Nazz Nazz
The Nazz' follow up is no slouch of a record either. Still combining hard driving melodies with powerful guitar, this album hints at bits of glam and hard-rock to come. The band follow their successful forays into production on their first
album (they produced two songs) by producing this entire follow-up. This becomes increasingly evident in the move away from just synthesizing their influences, as they had on the first album, and into a sound of their own. This album pretty much marked the end of the band, as the follow-up was largely culled from leftovers from these sessions. And for my tastes, Todd Rundgren's solo work just didn't have the power that came along with Nazz records. Again if you don't have this one pick it up quick.

Dead Meadow

Dead Meadow return with their 5th album and honestly the band have never felt more comfortable. As partial as I am to the band's heavy, Blue Cheer inspired past there's just something about the world-weary effect of Old Growth that feels like the band has finally found their true stride. Pretty much all of the shoegazy haze that enshrouded Flowers has been burnt away. Instead the band take a slower, mellower but not necessarily complacent road; boiling with a weariness and dust in throat wisdom that seems much more natural than the haze ever did. Old Growth merges the band's former murk and growl into a finely tuned balance; finding a way to maintain restrained spacey effects and guitar punch with a much cleaner approach and a heavier emphasis on the acoustic guitar. The results of the balance leave this as the band's most complete album to date even injecting a shamble of pop into what was once a frustrated haze. Keep your eye out for the album in all its double gatefold glory early next month.

Yet more trickles from the Sic Alps camp. This one comes out on RSTB favorite haven Woodsist and a righteous chunk of scuzz it is.

Sic Alps - Strawberry Guillotine 7"
The A-Side is a washed out pop capsule that thumps along with a chug and vigor that could only be Sic Alps. The harried vocals and easy beat of "Strawberry Guillotine" are a sharp contrast to the noise blister that takes shape on the B-side in
the form of Ratroq. Then they cap it off with a quick rock shimmy-shamble called "The Drake". Every time I get a new piece of the Sic Alps puzzle in my hand it makes me love them more.

Flash Lights

Liz Harris, otherwise know to most as Grouper, teams up with sound sculptor Jorge Behringer to combine her usual (but in no way typical) otherworldly vocals with a backdrop of processed field recordings, electronics and viola. The project was released as Eckords and put down on 5" courtesy of Students of Decay. Harris and Behringer tap the wormhole to oblivion and lay the results down on tape, wavering between haunting and outright floating in a sea of furious haze. Unfortunately it looks as if the run of 200 may be reaching the point of unavailabilty but some poking around a google search might just turn up an errant copy. This just piles on top of the great work Harris has begun to amass.

Steven R. Smith

Hala Strana's Steven R. Smith's latest solo album casts a huge shadow on the bulk of his previous work. Though wrought from the same broken soul blues mold that much of his work stems from, Owl has a unified foggy desolation that creeps like ice under the boot of Smith's lonesome guitar odes. I've long been impressed by Hala Strana, and Smith has worked alongside a number of great musicians from the Jeweled Antler ranks, but this outing sees him pour more of his being into every strained line and muted shuffle of strings than seems possible. Even at its most restrained Owl cuts like wet wind into the back of your neck, never letting you out of its grasp for a moment of warm comfortability, though as you adjust to the numbness that too becomes a kind of comfort; a constant that calms as much as it pricks.

Lumerians

A great debut from San Franciscan quartet, Lumerians. The self-titled ep walks freely between pounding krautian rhythms, etherial harmonies and even touches of dub. The band take nods from just about every arena feeding into modern psychedelics; keyboards buzz, drums pound and atmospherics rise into murky clouds of dust. Vocals, when they appear, trade back and forth between male and female voice. The tone is largely dark, breaking stride for a short foray into hope on the female led "Orgon Grinder," but for the most part dystopian synths quaver over an ominous undercurrent of off kilter tension. On the surface the temper remains calm but a sense of unease pervades the entire EP as if the moment you let yourself ease into unawareness some horrible fate will befall you. Really digging this vibe the whole way throughout.

The psychedelic era began a great progression into the weird underbelly of music that seems so commonplace today. Many luminaries such as Captain Beefhart, Zappa, Syd Barret and Skip Spence opened doors of possibility that I remain indebted to to this day, however, these weren't the only folks strumming on the weird side of the fence.

Lucifer - Big Gun
The strange ramblings of Peter Walker, ex-member of garage one-shots the Purple Gang, give Skip Spence a run for his money in the crazy loner category. According to the liner notes the members of Lucifer gathered together in caves
to record this album somewhere in Arizona. Only problem is there was no "band", the album was recorded by Pete by himself in the UK. So perhaps Pete was just lonely and made up a few friends to ease the time. Played in a rambling, psych-blues that definitely owe a debt to Zappa and Co., though given the nature of Pete's mental state the rambling probably doesn't owe a debt to anyone but himself. This is definitely a classic of the outsider variety and contains quite a few wonderful tunes to its credit.

St. John Green - St. John Green
Well this is downright normal by comparison to Lucifer but an interesting specimen aided by one of the era's more prolific personalities. St. John Green was produced and pushed by Kim Fowley, who's mark lays all over the L.A. psychedelic
scene, from contributions to Zappa's Freak Out to composing songs for The Byrds and Soft Machine. Fowley's role often lay behind the scenes and he had a knack for bringing out greatness. He predicted a meteoric rise for St. John Green but unfortunately though this is a solid and creative album it fell by the wayside. Fowley of course soldiered on but this remains the only bit of St. John Green that remains.

Fire on Fire

As the life of Cerberus Shoal began to wane, the members birthed a new incarnation; Fire on Fire amounts to the accoustic/homespun/downtempo version of CS give or take a member or two. This 5 song EP, the first offering from the band is being sold exclusively through their new home at Young God, which seems a perfect fit for their sound. A shock to the system if you're familiar with the Cerberus Shoal of old but not so much if you've been listening to some of the members' solo ventures of late. Gira is touting them as a "backwoods, fierce, psychedelic Mamas and Papas", which honestly isn't too incredibly far off. They may not hit the harmonies as deep as the Mamas but its a nice backporch update on the idea. Rustic overtones weave so effortlessly around each of the five songs that it seems almost unbelievable that this band ever played a dissimilar style. I'm excited to hear more from the collective and as luck has it, it looks like we may soon be able to. Young God's site boasts an upcoming album that will include none of this material. So grab this while the grabbin' is good and keep an ear to the wind for more from the band.

A great 7" from Wooden Shjips that somehow slipped my mind and didn't get a 2007 review. Ah well, better late than never.

Wooden Shjips - Summer of Love 7"
A massive track that spanned both sides of this 7", "Summer of Love" was pure a groove induced repeat-o psychsplosion in true Shjips form. The single saw two pressings, the first
in transparent red and the second in blue and the proceeds from the sale of the disc went to Food Not Bombs. Unfortunately the single may already be out of print but why not head over to Aquarius and check it out.

Bonecloud

Whew, one of the most awesomely self-descriptive band names to come out in a long time. Bonecloud's brand of shimmering drone puddles are both transparently effusive and still very tethered to a natural wave of drone. Merging deep muted rumbles with ethereal disembodied voices that lull like the blurred song of a multitude of lost souls; the collective have made a name over the course of quite a few short release CD-r's. Though that's certainly on the lighter side of things as far as Teenage Lycanthropy is concerned. Bonecloud turn their nimbus dronescapes to steam as they plunge to the Earth's core on the rumbler "Sea Cave" then jettison back into formless space to round out the whole of the disc tapping the sympathetic tone of the isosphere. Another in a long line of great releases from Ireland's Leaf Trail records and again showcasing the trademark large-form artwork collage's that make this CD-r label one to watch.

Earth

A few years ago Earth resurrected on a quest to find the drone elements in country and Western trappings. The resulting album, Hex is in my opinion the best thing the band has ever done, achieving a tenuous balance between heavy drone and the lonesome whine of steel strings. Since then the band has continued to bask in their Western Muse, and with excellent results. On their latest, The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull, they've found themselves standing in the same desolate crossroads that Grails tread upon last year, feverishly quavering in the heat of Moriconne's ghosts. The album is a far cry from what the band started out as and, the Earth purists will surely cry failure, but those purists should have long ago moved on to donning their Sunn o))) robes and buried the past. The band has moved far beyond their roots and into brave new territory far from the thunder of drones and while quite honestly I'll always have a soft spot for that weird little bit of Hex in the transition I think that honestly the progression was all for the best.

Misophone

One of the first really great releases I've heard this year actually came out at the tail end of last year but who's really counting anyway. The duo of S. Herbert and M.A Welsh has created a thoughtful, subtle folk-pop album that seems almost impossibly perfect. While, Where has it gone, all the beautiful music of our grandparents? It died with them, that's where it went... is really Misophone's first proper, label released album, it is in fact the duo's 13th collaborative recording to date. Playing on a coy sense of innocence mixed with Herbert's talents as a multi-instrumentalist, the album is really more orchestrated and dense than it seems on first listen; but the gentle ease with which Misophone deliver its 12 tracks makes it seem wholly effortless. The band even throw in a great Daniel Johnston cover and lending it's playfully heartfelt charm to his song is a perfect fit. Where Has It Gone... sits in great company on Sweden's Kning Disc, alongside Voice of the Seven Woods, Bird By Snow and The Skull Defekts. Seriously, pick it up now!

A rough shot of garage from the jukebox today. Some fuzzed up British nuggets and a pinch of San Francisco that are sure to please fans of this feature.

[MP3] Butch Engle & The Styx - I'm a Fool
An easy rocker out of SanFran that starts out vocal heavy and then pops into gear when the bass kicks in. Engle and The Styx weren't exactly chart toppers but this little taste of a West Coast swinger proves them well.

[MP3] The Accent- Red Sky At Night
A nice dose of garage-psych with phaser slapped all over the place and a heavy crumble of a bass line and just the right amount of acoustic breakdowns. A strange psych take on an old sailor's expression.

[MP3] Les Goths - Turn Over
Not exactly representative of their name, Les Goths were anything but dour. This spaced out psych rocket plays the phaser like another instrument and wields a popcorn drumbeat that propels the whole thing along at a fearsome pace. A damn shame they didn't produce more in this vein.

[MP3] The Sand - Listen to the Sky
Huge harmonious vocals smash into a bit of psychedelic imagery on this track by The Sand. A bit of Small Faces can be felt in this one, but mixed with a much more experimental nature than they ever reached. The breakdown is pure ridiculousness but the melodies more than outweigh the interruption.

[MP3] The Great Society - Heads Up
A quick dose of strum and a swagger of blues from the West Coast on this Great Society track. Very strong female vocals pervade this quick snippet that's over before you can begin to nod your head. A real fun track.

Sian Alice Group

Not too long after participating in The Social Registry's social club 7" series, Sian Alice Group lay their full length LP, 59.59 on us and surpass the expectations that have since been building. Though the group has quite a few pedigrees that surround them; adding Douglas Hart of Jesus and Mary Chain to their ranks and collaborating with members of Spiritualized and Gang Gang Dance, these don't really give any indication of the sound. The band's sound doesn't really bring to mind any of these collaborators. Built on a basis of spacy synths and plaintive almost crooning female vocals, the songs move from glassy calmness to propulsive yet extremely controlled rhythms and terse shards of guitar. And though the songs may seem a bit dissimilar, the album flows, tied together with the constant power of singer Sian Ahern's vocals and the natural prowess of the compiled players. Keep an ear out for this when it becomes available February 19th.

Somewhere along the line Excepter morphed from formless post-no neck side band into this crossroads of stoner noise and freaked beat 3 a.m. dance party musak. I've still got a soft spot for KA in my heart but the new direction is nothing if not amusing.

Excepeter - Burgers b/w The Punjab 12"
The A-Side is a pure greased nonsense thumper with chipmunk vocals and a slippery bass line that makes you uneasy in the best of ways. A great track in and of itself but the b-side really comes through
with space invaders sitars and a recessed house beat. This is probably the closest I've heard the band come to real "dance-y" styles but this feeling is totally shattered by the demonic growls that start shortly after the beat. Sounds like the band's upcoming album on Paw Tracks is going to be one to watch out for indeed.

Volcano The Bear

Veteran Brit skronk warriors Volcano The Bear return on Beta-Lactum with Amidst the Noise and Twigs. Flaying every notion of noise, folk and the experimental spaces between, the band have created a seething baroque masterpiece that uses clamor as melody and melody to jar. Passages of clank and clatter give way suddenly to pint sized vignettes of pleasantries before being bruskly whisked away in the twist and fizzle of a band hard at work adjusting your sense of what really is melodic or for that matter what's really clamor. This is psychedelic folk of a distinctly non-sunburnt California variety. Just as always VTB twist the nerve of the genre until it agrees with them. Definitely check this one out.

Silje Nes

Norway's Silje Nes has crafted a wondrous and whimsical album in the form of Ames Room. Songs that are equal parts playful, simple and heartfelt all swirl around in a mixture homespun keys and spare bedroom beats. Her voice whispers from under the covers with lyrics written in the frost that forms on the windows. Nes works in lightly wound loops that burst with an intimate charm that is in no way uncommon to her home region. Claptrap ambience and an acute yet charmingly simple sense of merging the natural with the electronic make Nes' compositions instantly endearing and yet subtly catchy. FatCat again mine some of the best that far shores have to offer and lays it upon us in doses we can handle. Ames Room is out in a stagger of release dates, already released in the UK, hitting the rest of Europe January 21st and the US on Feb 19th.

Magic Lantern

Just when I thought that the onslaught of heavy fuzz might slow to a trickle, Magic Lantern had to crank the scorched earth kruat nozzle on full blast and rain down upon us with this twisted nugget of thunder. The band had a small and I mean small (ltd to 30) run of EPs that I'm sure only fast friends were able to get their grubby mitts on but thankfully Not Not Fun rescued one of the key tracks from that release and slapped it on one side of this (still limited) cassette. "At the Mountains of Madness" more than lives up to the grandiose title it is saddled with. The track pulses in waves of repeated guitar fuzzed abrasion cut through with a smattering of tweaked out flute. The flip of the cassette finds the band live and still crushing the scene with an untitled jam. Head to NNF now and pick up a copy of this before they're out. Extra added bonus each cassette is inexplicably bedazzled with an array of jewels!

All right, all right twist my arm already! There have been a few requests to put some heavier releases up in the RRITW section and I'm nothing if not a pleaser. So here are two harder nuggets from the underside of the world. Enjoy!

Jesse Harper - Guitar Absolution
Jesse's true name is Doug Jerbine, a member of the cult New Zealand band The Brew. When Doug left New Zealand for a stint in England he adopted the moniker Jesse Harper. In his travels he reportedly impressed Hendrix, but no arrangements were
ever made for the two to sit down to tape. This album shows just where that interest might have stemmed from. A driving set of blues with a distinctive hard edge. Guitar Absolution is truly a lost guitar gem. Unfortunately Harper was bedazzled by the burgeoning Hare Krishna movement and shortly after this album abandoned his music career, abruptly ending what could have been some great musical accomplishments.

Human Instict - Stoned Guitar
Another shot out of New Zealand’s 70's cult bands, Human Instinct had in Billy TK what The Brew had with Jesse Harper. Definitely touting the hard edge of NZ rock, but with a distinct psychedelic flair, Human Instinct were more than just crushing
riffs. Human Instinct and Harper crossed paths and eventually the band went on to record a few of his songs, proving that Harper wasn't merely competition but also a compatriot. This album would remain a high point for the band, after its release members began to split and the quality took a turn downward.
